A student at the University of Kabianga has committed suicide by strangling herself in unclear circumstances.

Hellen Nyambura's decomposing body was reportedly found hanging in her single room.

The third-year Communications and Public Relations student lived at Chemyogaa trading centre, a few metres from the university.

She could have been in her fourth year at the university but she deferred her studies last year.

Witnesses say the 22-year-old from Nakuru County could have committed suicide on Saturday as that was the last time neighbours saw her attending to her domestic chores.

Confirming the incident, Kericho West Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Gerald Mbae said neighbours were disturbed by a bad ordour coming from her room, which prompted them to find out.

“The incident was reported to the police by Mobego location chief Reuben Serem after neighbours raised alarm over an odour that was coming out of the student’s room, which had been locked from the inside. When the police went to the scene and gained entry into the house by sawing off the window grills and unlocked the door, they found the deceased decomposing body dangling from the roof.”
