The Federation of Women lawyers has condemned a doctor who has gone to court seeking Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) to be declared legal and anti-FGM be disbanded.FIDA chairperson Josephine Mong’are yesterday said the idea was retrogressive and it's outlawed in the constitution.“It is a bad. Even the Constitution outlaws retrogressive cultures. As a doctor, she should inform us the positive side of FGM,” Ms Mong’are said.Dr Tatu Kamau had filed the case at the Machakos High Court seeking orders from the court go reverse the outlawed process and making it legal.Dr Kamau argues that if the process would have been legal, women would have done it in hospitals.“Female circumcision is practised differently from one community to another, but it can be made safe. It is a minor surgical procedure that does not require anaesthesia or being put into a theatre,” Dr Tatu Kamau said in previous press address. However, former Anti-FGM board chair, Him Jebii Kilimo says that legalising the cut would take the back many strides behind the gains already made.“That case is misplaced. She is not talking about challenges that women who have undergone the cut go through. The law against FGM was drafted and passed to protect people from cultures that were harmful,” Dr Kilimo said.
