According to Kenya-Today, Uasin-Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago together with a number of MPs from the county are leading the Tuesday demos at the university's main campus in Eldoret.

Prof Ayiro was on Monday appointed by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i to head the institution on acting basis but the news did not seem to go well with a section of community members.

Reports say that the community had expected Prof Isaac Kosgey who hails from the region to succeed outgoing Prof Richard Mibey but were disappointed by Matiangi’s choice.

According to a tough speaking Mandago, the university's graduation ceremony scheduled for Thursday and Friday this week will not take place unless Matiang'i rescinds the appointment and replaces Ayiro with Kosgey.

“We want to be very clear on this. There will be no graduation on Friday if Kosgey is not the VC," he said in address to workers at the institution. "We have told Matiang'i to immediately release his appointment letter," he said as quoted by the Star.

Other leaders who were part of the protests were Elgeyo Marakwet governor Alex Tolgos, MPs James Bett (Kesses), Oscar Sudi (Kapseret) Sila Tiren (Moiben), and speaker of the Uasin Gishu county assembly Isaac Terer.
