[Photo: en.africatime.com]ODM Director of elections and Suna East MP Junet Mohammed has castigated the Jubilee administration for what he has termed as 'working in cahoots with its MPs to try and muzzle the Political Parties Fund'.This is after ODM lost a court case where it was demanding Sh4.1 billion from Treasury which it argued were arrears accrued since 2012."It is unfortunate that despite Parliament having enacted the Political Parties’ Act, 2012 that makes it mandatory for 0.3 percent of the national revenue to be allocated to the Fund, this law is disregarded," Mohammed says through an opinion piece published in the Star, Friday.Junet says that political parties have continued to suffer at the hands of Jubilee administration because they have never been allocated the money that was due to them. "All this is a scheme to cripple the parties. This is why the ODM filed the case at the High Court demanding its money. So, it is irrelevant whether you have the requisite numbers or not. The National Treasury has blatantly defied the law that requires the political parties be given 0.3 percent of national revenue," he adds. The MP notes that NASA leader Raila Odinga withdrawing from the presidential rerun for 'genuine reasons will not make a political party die'.According to Political Parties Act 2011, the total number of votes secured by a political party shall be computed by adding the total number of votes obtained in the preceding general election by a political party in the election for the President, members of Parliament, county governors and members of county assemblies.Odinga was only 73,000-votes-strong during the just concluded October 26 repeat presidential poll. Junet argues that the cash-strapped party has met other conditions such as having the required numbers in Parliament remain to qualify for the funds."If they can only give us the money that has been kept for the last five years, it is enough to keep us running for some time before we ask for more," the fiery legislator begs.
