The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret town has received a grant of Sh250 million from the World Bank and the National Treasury aimed at supporting treatment and community education on chronic diseases.
According to the hospital's Chief Executive Officer Dr. Wilson Aruasa, the program has already been rolled out in Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma and Elgeiyo Marakwet counties.
"The community will be taught on how to treat and help prevent chronic diseases such as High Blood Pressure, Kidney, Cancer. Our aim is to prevent the prevalence of the disease especially at the grassroots level," said Dr. Aruasa at the hospital's premises, Sunday.
"We will also train community health workers who will identify the diseases easily and treat it before it reaches to advanced stages. They will also sensitize the community on how to prevent the diseases," he added.
Dr. Aruasa further said the program will also help decongest the Hospital since most disease will be treated at the local level with them handling only referral cases.
Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital is the second largest public health facility in the country and handles referral cases from the North Rift counties, some of the Western Kenya counties as well as patients from neighboring Uganda and South Sudan.
