The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has begun random raids on businesses that sell pirated and pornographic movies in Mombasa.
Speaking when he conducted inspections at MwembeTayari market on Friday, KFCB Coast regional manager Boniventure Kioko said persons illegally selling copyrighted DVDs and CDs will no longer be tolerated.Kioko said the piracy raids will be extended to Kwale, Kilifi and Taita Taveta counties to protect local content producers who have been left to rue losses due to the unrelenting activities of pirates.“Sale of pirated products is not only done by roadside vendors but also at indoor shops across Mombasa County,” he added. He, however, said smuggling of pirated DVDs from neighbouring Tanzania has dropped significantly in recent years.“Unscrupulous merchants have now resorted to online decoding and selling pirated items by downloading software of music and movies protected by legislation,” he said, adding that illegal downloading was on the rise.Kioko appealed to the public to be on the lookout for pirated and pornographic content and report to the Board and the police for action to be taken against the culprits.
