The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has launched a nationwide crackdown on those selling pornographic materials to members of the public.

Speaking on Monday at a Mombasa Hotel, the Board's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ezekiel Mutua said there is an increase in the number of pornographic and x-rated films being sold in the country.

“Our attention has been drawn to the proliferation of pornographic material in several parts of the country which are being distributed mainly through film outlets.”

He added: “The board is worried that if the trend is not confronted, those engaging in the sale of the sexually explicit materials will endanger the country’s moral fabric. Exposure of x-rated films and inappropriate media contents to young people will lead to increased violence in the country,” said Mr Mutua.

Mr Mutua cautioned movie shop operators against selling pornographic materials.

He said the crackdown will target unregistered video distributors and exhibitors who will be arrested and prosecuted.

“The film’s board will be working together with the police to conduct spot checks on all the video shops and arrest those found selling pornographic materials and also those operating without a license,” said the CEO.

Mr Mutua also urged the public to report any individual or video shops selling sexually explicit materials to the public.
