The accumulating filth at the Wakulima market in Nakuru town is as a result of the overcrowding of hawkers at the market, market officials have said.
The market chairman, David Mwangi, said that the available litter bins at the market are not enough to cater for the needs of the over three thousands traders.
Speaking to our reporter Wednesday morning at the market, Mwangi said that the market needs a bigger dumpsite, which can accommodate all the waste leaving the market stalls every minute.
“Since the market was re-opened after renovation, the amount of garbage has been increasing day by day and that is the reason why the market is so filthy,” said Mwangi.
“The litter bins are very few and they cannot handle all the garbage leaving the market, and we want the government to do something about it because if the issue of garbage is not handled well then the market will become a no go zone for clients,” added Mwangi.
Mwangi further said that with the rains season setting in, the accumulation of garbage at the market will pose a health risk to both the traders and the buyers at the market.
“You can imagine how this place will look when the rains start proper, if it is this filthy and we are in the dry season,” he said.
Mwangi’s remarks came after traders at the market raised their concern over the dire state of the market, which they said is worrying due to the accumulation of uncollected garbage.
