Deputy President William Ruto has weighed once again on the vexed question of constitutional change today, Tuesday, in Mombasa during the ongoing Legislative Summit.

Mr Ruto said that the discussion on constitutional review had to be conducted with the Kenyan people at the front and centre.

He argued that the discussion could not be about politicians.

''Even when we will discuss that subject, it cannot be a discussion about the politicians only. It has to be about a discussion about the people. Those who do not have jobs. Those who do not have food. Those who do not have roads and a health centre. It has to be about them. It cannot continue to be about us. That's all I am saying that once we go to that discussion, we have to be honest,'' Deputy President Ruto said.

The Deputy President's words are seen as a softening of his stance given that they were not an outright rejection of constitutional review.

He has maintained in the past that the constitutional change that is being advocated by one side of the political spectrum is aimed at rewarding individuals and not Kenyans.

Some of his allies have strongly rejected that call saying that it is aimed at complicating William Ruto's 2022 prospects.
