The government has released funds that will be used to pay farmers who had supplied their maize to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
Finance Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich says the funds have already been wired to the ministry of Agriculture and will be transferred to the NCPB this week.
Speaking at Kaptuli village in Moiben Sub-county during the burial of Major (Rtd) Charles Chesire, Rotich assured farmers that they will be paid before the end of this week.
“As I speak now, the money is with the ministry of agriculture and I can assure farmers that they will receive their payments by the end of next week,” said the CS.
It is estimated that NCPB owes farmers over Sh4 billion for the maize supplied since the end of last year.
Farmers have been up in arms over the delays in the payments and had at some point accused the Jubilee administration of deliberately trying to frustrate them.
NCPB was purchasing a 90-kilogram bag of maize from farmers at S3,200.
It now remains to be seen whether the government would finally keep its promise based on the fact that farmers have been given promises that had ended up never to be implemented.
