Nakuru rabbit farmers have appealed to the government to set up a ready market for their rabbit meat.
The farmers claimed that they had many rabbits ready for slaughter, but had no market to sell them.
“Majority of the butcheries in this area buy the meat at a throw away prices and since the meat goes bad in a very short while we are forced to sell it to them,” said Penina Macharia, a farmer in Njoro.
She cited that since many people had adopted rabbit keeping, the supply was more than the demand for the meat.
“The meat is readily available. This has forced the prices to fluctuate to even Sh250 per kilo unlike earlier on when it used to sell for at least Sh600,” added Macharia.
Charles Mwaura, another farmer from the area, also called on the government to start rabbit meat inspection in the area before the meat sold.
“There are no set regulation for rabbit meat sale. People might be consuming meat that is contaminated or not well handled and this might affect their health. The Ministry of public health should look into the standardisation of the meat,” added Mwaura.
