Patients were forced to be evacuated from their wards as fire broke out at the Kisii Level 5 Teaching and Referral Hospital on Friday afternoon.
The 1.30pm incident saw hospital staffs hurriedly move the patients out of the danger zone as others battled to extinguish the flames which had broken out in one of the nurses' stations.
Speaking to reporters, Chief Nursing Officer Merlene Makone confirmed that no casualties were recorded as a result of the incident.
“The patients were first evacuated before the fire was put out. We suspect that the fire was caused by a possible electrical fault. Luckily no one was injured in the event,” said Makone.
She added, “The fire was quickly contained, there is no need to worry."
Makone noted that reports about extensive damage to the hospital as a result of the fire were grossly exaggerated and mere rumours.
Hospital operations in most departments have since been returned to normal.
