The Saturday afternoon fire left two foodstuff shops, one paraffin kiosk and various cereals shops in ashes. The fire was allegedly uncontrollable due to the paraffin.

Allegedly, a business owner in the building left a gas cooker at 12:30 pm which allegedly caused the fire.

According to Gatundu North constituency deputy OCPD, Daniel Nyamiti, who was at the scene, the inferno could not be put off due to lack of a fire fighting station near Gituamba shopping centre.

Hopeless residents, however, tried fighting the fierce fire using sand, water and iron sheets but were unable to contain it.

According to Moses Muriithi who owns a paraffin kiosk, the owner of the gas cooker reportedly left her premises shortly and then the fire happened.

Muriithi added that firefighters from Thika arrived an hour later where they found the business premises in ashes.

“We have rescued nothing so far but God is good that no one was hurt or injured,” said Muriithi.

The business owners are now calling on the government to establish a fire station in the area to help avoid such happenings.
