More than 60 students of Ekalakala secondary school in Masinga sub-county of Machakos county were on Friday left in the cold after their dormitory caught fire.
Property of unknown value was also reduced to ashes by the fire.
The fire is said to have started in the boys' dormitory on Friday night leaving nothing to salvage despite efforts to put out the fire.
The incident was confirmed by Masinga Assistant County commissioner John Kisang' who said that the fire could have been started by electricity fault but didn't rule out arson.
"The dormitory that caught fire housed more than sixty students who were left in the cold after the tragedy struck," said Kipsang.
He noted that police have commenced investigations to unravel what caused the fire.
"Could be electricity fault but we can't be sure that is why police have commenced investigations," said the Deputy County Commissioner.
He also advised school administrations to ensure they employ qualified engineers to do the wiring in their schools to avoid such tragedies that may turn out to be fatal.
