The incident is the second to be reported in less than a month at West Kenya Sugar Factory located at Olepito village in Busia County's Teso South sub-county.

It took the intervention of fire fighters from the county government of Busia to contain it before spreading.

A similar incident occurred on 26 October but was also contained.

The Factory Human Resource Manager Dickens Okoth said the Bagasse generated heat from the factory engines sparked off the fire.

Had it not been contained quickly, Mr Okoth said it could have caused massive damage.

Bagasse is a fibrous matter that remains after sugarcane stalks are crushed to extract juice. It is a dry pulpy residue left after the extraction of juice from sugar cane.

It is utilized as a biofuel and in the manufacture of pulp and building materials.

Busia County Transport Manager Abraham Otolong who was at the scene said the fire was brought under control at 2am on Thursday.

"We had to refill the engine with water from the Factory's reservoir. I thank the factory management for according us the necessary support," Otolong said.

Otolong said he received a telephone call from the County Executive Committee Member for Culture and Sports Martin Kafwa at 9.40pm Wednesday.

"Immediately, I marshaled the fire engine team. By 10.10pm we were at the fire scene. I salute them for the job well done," he said.
