A case in point was at Kirobon Girls High school, Rongai sub-county on Wednesday after a dormitory was reduced to ashes at a time when form four students were in class for tuition classes.

The big question remains; why were the students in session at a time when they are supposed to be at home on holidays? Is the holiday tuition ban still applicable? As much as one may see this as a way of preparing the candidates well ahead of their final Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), a government directive must be observed by all concerned parties irrespective of any other factor.

A spot check by this writer across schools within Nakuru town and its environs indicated that most schools; both primary and secondary were offering holiday tuition contrary to the ministry's directive.

A teacher at St Theresa primary school who requested anonymity confided that a majority of the schools were offering tuition "just to be above the rest".

"Basing on last year's performance and exam leaking scandles, most schools; especially those that posted exemplary results want to use holiday tuition to prepare well so as not to be seen as exam cheats come next year, the pressure is so high," he said.

Authorities from the county education ministry are yet to commend with Kirobon Girls High school being closed immediately.
