Property of unknown value has been lost after a mysterious fire razed down Part of the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) Eldoret depot on Thursday morning.
The cause of the 4 am fire is yet to be established, but preliminary investigations attribute the accident to a mortar explosion in one of the driers housing three silos.
Confirming the incident, Uasin Gishu County Secretary Peter Lelei and the county executive in charge of Roads Gideon Birir said that county emergency team has already arrived at the scene to help put out the inferno. Lelei also said that the situation was easily contained since the fire had not broken out in the adjacent silos.
"The situation could have been worse had the fire spread to adjacent silos which serve as the country's strategic grain reserve," said Mr. Lelei, as quoted by The Daily Nation.
A worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that they heard an explosion from the silo before they fire broke out.
