Heavy black smoke was seen coming out from the factory located one kilometre from the main Bata factory.

Managers and supervisors of the factory rushed to the scene to gauge the extent of the damage, but refused to speak to the media. Raw materials and some for the factory products were salvaged as they were carried outside the factory gate. The estimated worth of the damage was not revealed.

Fire fighters from Nairobi County government and other local water lorry carriers assisted in putting out the fire.

A resident, James Wakaru said the fire was said to have started from a point where there was a worker doing some welding.

“I heard that welding was going on in the factory, and some sparks flew from that point and onto some raw materials nearby,” said Wakaru.

Most of the materials used in the making of shoes are highly flammable a fact which possible made the fire burn faster.

Residents flocked around the factory, shocked by the turn of events. Footplus is known for making handmade rubber shoes. There were no casualties reported concerning the incident.
