Firefox is capitalising on Facebook’s crisis by painting itself as the savior of the Internet.
The browser has announced an extension that will be isolating Facebook to a special tab.
This tab will be acting like a Facebook-prison, that will prevent the social network from collecting data on the pages you visit.
The tab will also prevent unnecessary adds streaming your way, meaning you will only get precisely personalised adds.
The extension is called Facebook Container https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/facebook-container/
If you visit the Facebook using the Firefox Container, or by clicking Facebook buttons on other pages, this special, blue-colored tab will open, while on the tab, clicking on a link will take you off Facebook, opening the page in a normal tab.
“The pages you visit on the web can say a lot about you.
“They can infer where you live, the hobbies you have, and your political persuasion. There’s enormous value in trying this data to your social profile, and Facebook has a network of trackers on various websites. This code tracks you invisibly and it is often impossible to determine when this data is being shared.” warns Mozilla, the company which owns Firefox.
It is unfortunate that Facebook “follows” its users even after they have left the social network, to find out what kind of products and services the users like so that it can serve you ads that you are more likely to click.
Mozilla has already clarified that this extension (Facebook Container) would not prevent another scandal like Cambridge Analytica.
However, it is a useful tool for those who will not delete their Facebook accounts because they use it on a daily basis, but are afraid of being spied on.
