A company based in Nakuru has set out to provide affordable, decent and long lasting housing in Nakuru slums using recycled plastics.

Mr Maina Muchai, the founder and CEO of Smart Builders Solutions, has revealed that the company that is based in Kiamunyi area near the Gioto dumping site in Nakuru has said that their program is two pronged.

“Apart from the houses we will be putting up, my company will be engaged in ensuring clean environments free of plastic waste which has become a big eye sore and a challenge to our drainage system,” said Muchai who started the company last year in February.

The firm has already constructed some houses in Rongo.

To make the houses, the company uses recycled plastics as its main ingredient.

It also uses sand and wooden poles and Muchai revealed that a 10 by 10 house costs only Sh150, 000.

”We have seen a lot of small-scale traders who raise money to buy land as a group but never build on them. We are here to bridge the gap where we build for you and give you an option of up to one and half years to repay us,” said Muchai.

He added that they will be offering free training to the youth in the slums through apprenticeship.

This, he noted, will empower them with employment skills and also involve them in projects that will ensure the slums will be devoid of plastics.

“At the same time, we are encouraging residents in informal settlements to sort their household waste by providing sacks for organic, plastics and other waste. The organic waste will be used in the making of organic fertiliser because the structures we put up include hanging kitchen gardens,” he said.
