First lady Margaret Kenyatta has urged Nakuru County Government to come up with proper environmental management strategies to combat cholera spread in the area.
The disease has so far claimed 14 lives and 114 people have currently been treated in Nakuru County.
“The county needs to come up with proper solid waste management systems. Cholera can be controlled if residents practiced proper hygiene and maintain sanitation,” notes Kenyatta.
She was speaking at Afraha stadium on Thursday where she urged residents should improve sanitation not only in public places but also in their homes.
“It is important to take care of the communicable diseases by ensuring that we prevent them at all costs,” notes Kenyatta.
The first lady challenged the county leadership to come up with proper strategies to maintain cleanliness in the area.
Director of Medical Services Nicholas Muraguri said that area residents should play a key role in the elimination of the disease.
He cited that the disease, which had so far affected Homabay, Kisii, Mombasa and Kwale could only be contained by maintaining proper health standards.
“We are appealing to residents to practice simple hygiene like boiling drinking water,” said Muraguri.
Some of the areas affected by the outbreak include Rhonda, Bondeni, Kiti, Bangaladesh and Kambi ya Moto.
Residents living in those area has been urged to clean their food and boil their water before consuming it.
