[Photo/constructionkenya.com]At least 2,000 jobs will be created once construction of the first phase of Tatu City is complete next year. The construction was launched by the Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed in 2015.
Aligned to the Nairobi Metro 2030 Strategy, the construction on 2,500 acres of land is a major investment in Kenya. Speaking during a site tour of the facility yesterday, Kenya country head Nick Langford said the government has played a great role in attracting investments that would, in turn, create jobs.
Once complete, Tatu City will be a large-scale urban development consisting of residential, commercial, industrial, tourism, social and recreation amenities. Tatu is aimed at significantly de-congesting Nairobi by offering a unique live, work and play environment for an estimated 70,000 residents and 30,000 daily visitors.
Already 13 firms, among them Dormans Coffee, whose processing plant is underway, Bidco oil Refinery Ltd, Unilever and Kim Fay which it is set to construct a new production facility, have sealed deals with them.
When the facility is fully built, close to 200 Dormans employees will work at the Tatu Light Industrial Park (LIP). According to Langford the company that owns the land intends to use Sh2.2 billion in the next two years in undertaking various projects. “We have about 500 people working on various projects; in two years time, we will create thousands of jobs,” said Langford.
The city, he said, will have shopping malls, education, and religious institutions. Plans by local healthcare providers are also underway. The bulky infrastructure undertaking is already complete of a Sh2.2 billion sewer system and a road network. Water treatment construction is also ongoing.
Once complete, the project is estimated to cost more than Sh12 billion with residential accommodation of controlled development of up to 100,000 people. “We are the master developer and we shall come up with guidelines.” An international team that makes sure the guidelines are followed.
