This is part of the economic stimulus initiative by the Kenyan government, which the Kisii County fisheries department director has once again challenged the residents from the county to take up their tools and venture into fish farming.

The County director Mr. Edwin Muga urged farmers to try their hand in fish farming as one way of boosting their economic status since most residents from the region, have always stuck to the old ways of farming most noticeably banana and maize farming which has turned out against them due to limited piece of land for substantial farming and other prevailing weather conditions.

Muga argued that most area farmers have remained conservative due to poor technical know-how on the existing farming alternatives whose long term solution he said lies on extensive farmers' technical trainings and professional engagements through the bi-weekly seminars commissioned by the county fisheries department.

He added that the economic stimuli initiative, which was launched by the Kenyan government in partnership with other international fundind bodies, is part of the 2030 economic millennium goal, it is meant to empower small scale farmers.

"We are prepared to train our farmers on how to rear fish, you need not to own a water pool to practice fish farming just a small portion outside your house is enough," Muga expressed.

Notwithstanding the challenges coming through as they execute their duties, Muga acknowledged the concerted efforts from those few farmers who have shown their interest in embracing fish farming in the county.

As he expressed hopes for more farmers joining in citing the immense response from the Nyamache residents during the recently concluded workshop prepared by the department in Nyamache sports arena.
