Uasin Gishu County has for a long time been known to be the home of dairy farming and cereals.
However, in the recent past, a new enterprise is taking shape and growing really fast.
The farmers after realising the low cost of input required in fish farming, available market and the need to maximise their farms are seriously adopting the new venture.
Furthermore, in the last three months for example, the fisheries staff under the department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries have supervised the construction of 75 new ponds in the county.
Mr Machuka, the Sub-County Fisheries officer for Kesses says the demand for fish farming is overwhelming and the enterprise is gaining a lot of popularity while Florence Khayanga, a fish farmer in Kimumu ward is among those farmers who have adopted fish farming under new technology.
"I have a liner pond that has incorporated hapas and aerators thus enabling me to stock a total of six thousand catfish in a 20m×8m pond," says Florence.
She is also planning to construct raised ponds to grow Tilapia.
The County Director for Fisheries John Otiego says a lot has been done by the county that will even further boost the prospects of fish farming in the county.
“The construction of an Ultra-Modern fish hatchery which is nearing completion at the University of Eldoret will ensure steady supply of quality fingerlings to the farmers in the county at a competitive price," said Otiego.
The demand for fish in the county far much outweighs the supply and to ensure farmers get instant pay for their produce, the county have supported the Fish Farmers Cooperative to set up an Aquashop, a one stop shop for fish, fish products and inputs in Eldoret town that will improve marketing.
