Traders selling fish within Kisii town have hiked prices citing that the supply as gone down.

According to the traders, the number of suppliers has gone down leading to the price hikes to meet the increased demand.

“We have few numbers of suppliers bringing fish from the lake. Due to the high number of customers, we have been forced to hike prices to meet the cost because the suppliers are also charging us highly,” said Edinah Okeyo, a trader.

Mrs Okeyo added that Kisii has been hit by shortage of vegetables due to the prolonged dry spell which has made several residents to buy fish and omena.

“In the past, 3 tilapia retailed at Sh60 but now we are selling at Sh120. A few months ago omena was costing Sh150 per tin and now it is trading at Sh250,” she added.

She said the prices will only drop once the supply increases.
