Police say the man was trying to retrieve fishing nets before he slipped and drowned.

Confirming the incident, area deputy OCPD Agnes Amajong said efforts by his colleagues to save him were futile as the water levels in the lake were high.

Amajong, who oversaw the retrieval of the deceased body, urged fishermen to wear reflective jackets for purposes of timely rescue.

“We have launched a probe into the death of the youth who might have slipped and fell in the lake,” he said.

However, area fisheries officer Mathew Ngila questioned whether the deceased was a licensed fisherman.

Mr Ngila told journalists that the deceased did not have safety fishing kit as required, adding that cases of fish poaching are on the rise.

“We are not sure whether the deceased was a licensed fisherman but we wait for police report,” he said, warning that fish poachers will not be tolerated.

The body of the deceased was taken to Naivasha sub-county hospital mortuary.
