The fisherman identified as Fredrick Otieno is said to have met his death after he suddenly collapsed and drowned when they were about to land to the shore.

His counterpart identified as David Opiyo however swam to safety.

According to, Jacklyne Audi, the deceased is suspected to have been sick during his fishing expedition which might have worsened the situation.

She said efforts by the fishermen to rescue him hit a snag as they were overpowered by the strong wind at that moment.

Area MCA William Angul who visited the scene said they have already contacted the sub-marine officers to help them retrieve the body which is suspected to have been swept away by wind to the deepest point of the Lake.

The deceased’s mother, Antonina Atieno, expressed her disappointment following the death of his son who has been acting as the family breadwinner.

As fellow fishermen continue with the search for the body, the family of the deceased and the surrounding community members are currently camping at the beach as they perform some traditional rituals that may help them recover the body.

The area chief who confirmed the incident, warned the fisherman to always wear safety fishing gears while on a fishing mission exercise to avoid such accidents.

“We have always urged fishermen to wear protective devices while fishing to help prevent such deaths,” he said.
