Fishermen in Kisumu County have been urged to keep off fishing fingerlings in the lake.

This is a way of maintaining fish population within Lake Victoria.

Addressing the fishermen at Dunga beach, Kisumu County executive member for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Dr Stephen Orot advised the fishermen to ensure the lake's survival is not at risk.

He also urged stakeholders to stick together for the sake of the lake's prosperity.

Dr Orot also proposed to promote and support  fishermen in all aspects and in whatever capacity they can including sponsoring of youths who are willing to go for fisheries training at the recently launched Riat Kisumu Institute of Research and Technology.

The residents of Dunga beach were also promised an improvement in terms of infrastructural development through the introduction of ice cooling plants and tarmacked roads. The move is meant to ensure fishing business succeeds.

During the event various youths also got an opportunity to exhibit their skills through their art and craft works.

Dr Orot said that if well exploited, Lake Victoria alone is able to generate revenue which can be used to support various development projects within Kisumu County.
