Fishermen affected by the Construction of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) in Mombasa County are set to receive their compensation starting next week.
In a statement to newsrooms, Kenya Railways managing director Atanas Maina said the payment process will be fast tracked, adding that a total of Sh215 million will be distributed among the affected persons.
''In order to deal with the compensation process expeditiously, KR is fast tracking the payment process and expects to start disbursement of money to the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) bank accounts next week,'' said Maina.
Maina said 1,624 project affected persons were identified in the region, adding that verification of data is underway to pave way for the final payment by the Kenya Railway finance department.
This comes after Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho threatened to take the matter to Court, to compel the government to compensate fishermen displaced by the SGR construction project in the county.
