Fishermen operating at Lake Naivasha have been warned against flouting fishing rules.

The fisheries department in Nakuru County said fishermen found flouting the fishing regulations will be barred from carrying on with their fishing activities at the lake.

The warning comes following the increased hippo attacks that have left four with injuries and one dead.

According to the Nakuru County fisheries officer Mathew Ngila, the numerous attacks is blamed on the illegal fishing in restricted areas.

“The number of attacks by hippos is worrying and should be blamed on illegal fishing in areas where fishermen have been warned not to fish. We are advising the fishermen to stop illegal fishing activities to prevent further attacks,” he said.

He said KWS should not be blamed over the attacks.

“We have heard some people blaming KWS but I want to challenge the fishermen to ensure their fishing activities in the lake is legalized because KWS officers will not come to protect them and leave their work stations,” he added.
