National Environmental Management Authority on Monday morning enforced the ban of plastic bags and managed to arrest five of thevendors who were found selling papers at Daraja Mbili market.

This is according to the Kisii County director for NEMA Mr Samson Bokea who said their institution had given the locals enough time to ensure that their stock ends before they enacted on arresting those still selling and using plastic bags.

Bokea said the Authority had ensured all plastic bags in the county were destroyed or recycled but infiltration from neighboring counties was bringing back the menace.

He regretted that some unscrupulous plastic bag dealers from the neighboring counties of Migori and Kisumu respectively were secretly selling plastic bags to Kisii traders.

He called on all stakeholders to join hands with NEMA to collect any disposed plastic bags to avoid the environmental degradation associated with the use of the bags.

“We call on all stakeholders especially the local residents to partner with us to collect and dispose the used plastic bags that litter the town and its suburbs as we seek an environmental friendly atmosphere in our county,” said County NEMA director.

He said those who were arrested will be arraigned in court later on today to answer the charges and that will make others learn to stop using plastic bags.

The director was speaking at Kisii town while leading the operations.
