Police in Kandara have arrested five suspected cattle thieves who were transporting a stolen cow worth Sh90,000 in a 14 seater matatu.

The suspects were arrested following a tip off from members of the public who saw the cow being loaded into the matatu in an estate near Thika greens.The cow’s owner, Moses Muiruri from Miruka, had recorded a statement about his missing cow at the Kabati Police Station, prompting police to swing into action to nub the thieves.A woman was among the five suspects who nabbed during the Monday incident. However, two other suspects believed to be part of the gang escaped the trap laid by the police.According to Kandara OCPD Wilson Kosgey, two of the suspects work as night guards at a petrol station just a few metres from where the stolen cow was found."We arrested five of the suspects. Two night guards Morris Lemuren and Jonathan Silonga, the matatu driver Gikonyo Ndiba and a woman Irene Wanjiku Ndungu,” said the OCPD.Cases of cows being stolen in Kandara have been rampant over the last three months. It is believed that the stolen cows are taken to Murang’a where there is a ready market.
