It is advisable not to scratch your nipples. The scratch may damage them by being inflamed, swollen and cracked. Here are five reasons of itchy nipples while breastfeeding and what to do about it
1. Infection
Itchiness is caused a bacteria or fungal infection. Bacteria infection is seen during the itching of a nipple thus, forming pus. One have to seek medication by applying the antibacterial ointment on the nipples. Fungal infection occurs during and after feeds. This is whereby a mother will feel the itching on the nipple. Nipple thrush takes place when the nipples turn pink and shiny.
2. Contact dermatitis
This is caused by the irritation of skin products. Nipples and areola sometimes they turn red, dry, cracked and sore due to the contact dermatitis. Medical attention should be done for prevention.
3.Eczema
Eczema occurs mostly in breastfeeding mothers because of the sensitive skin. A red itchy rash is a common infection seen on the nipple. Therefore a steroid cream should be prescribed for prevention. Maintaining a natural moisture in the skin eases the nipple eczema. Using substances such as soaps and gels should be limited. Prolonged contact with water should also be avoided.
4. Paget's disease
Page's disease is a rare condition seen in the nipple itching. Here are the early symptoms of Paget's disease. Mimic nipple dermatitis, a flattened nipple, a lump in the breast, discharge from the nipple, skin changes on the nipple. A medical advice is important to the victim
5. Cracked skin
Nipples damage is mostly experienced in the early weeks of breastfeeding. The skin around the nipple gets dry causing the damage. Cracking and dryness on the nipples lead to Itchiness. Suboptimal positioning and attachment is the most cause of painful nipple and damage during the early week. A lactating consultant is therefore needed by helping ladies in treating painful nipples.
