Five men have been charged with being in possession of radioactive material used for making radiological dispersal devices termed as dirty bombs without a valid license.
Francis Otieno Oluoch, Simon Muturi Gichuki, Nathaniel Kiprono Tarus, Johnson Nyarangi Omaiyo and Robert Makini Osano were arrested on August 20, 2016 at 9pm in Langata after they were found in possession of a package containing a dangerous radioactive material known as cesium 137, contrary to section 16(2) of the Radiation Protection Act.
The prosecution said that police officers recovered the chemical from one of the suspects’ house and handed it over to bomb experts from the Bomb Disposal Unit for examination and analysis.
They denied the charge and were remanded in custody until 30th August 2016 when the court will determine their bond application.
Chief magistrate Daniel Ogembo set the hearing of the case for 26th September 2016.
