Five family members were on Thursday night killed in a road accident along the Voi-Mwatate road.
Confirming the incident, Taita Taveta police commander Fred Ochieng said the accident occurred at Landi area after the matatu they were travelling in hit a canter.The matatu is said to have veered of the road and overturned due to the impact.Ochieng said the matatu was ferrying mourners to a funeral at Ngulu area in Werugha.Elisha Wawaka, a relative of the deceased, said the fifth victim died at a private hospital on Friday morning while undergoing treatment.He said eight other passengers who escaped with injuries were taken to Moi referral hospital in Voi and later transferred to Ikanga private hospital due to the ongoing nurses' strike, The Star reports.The police boss said investigations have been launched to establish the cause of the accident, and urged motorists to remain vigilant in a bid to avoid such incidences.“Motorists should be cautious on unmarked roads. They should avoid speeding at night due to poor visibility,” he said.The bodies were taken to the Moi Hospital Morgue.
