Five guards were on Wednesday killed following an attack by armed thugs at Mitamboni Market, Machakos County.
Four other guards are said to have been injured by the panga-yielding thugs, and are currently receiving treatment at Makueni Level Five Hospital.
Businesses at the trading centre remained closed Thursday morning, as traders stood in solidarity with the watchmen.
The traders and residents took to the streets to protest against the killing, accusing police in the area of laxity.
According to Citizen Digitial, officers were forced to shoot in the air to disperse the residents who had barricaded roads and lit bonfires, after threatening to torch a police vehicle.
