Five people from Boka area have been admitted at Garissa Referral Hospital following fresh outbreak of cholera.
According to Dr Hassan Abdullahi, Doctor in charge of Garissa hospital, four of the cholera patients are in a more stable condition while the fifth is yet to stabilize.
Hassan noted that Rabid Diagnosis Tests (RDT)and stool culture have already been carried out on the five patients in the facility where all of them turned positive.
“The medical facility has established a cholera treatment and diagnosis center and infection control measures being put in place. We are aware of how contagious cholera disease is. We have restricted relatives and other visitors from the wards,” noted Hassan.
He also pointed out that the manner in which patients were being ferried to hospitals using taxis was very dangerous, a fact that has been termed as a contributing factor to the fast spread of the disease.
“Cholera patients should be quarantined even from their villages or taken to any nearest health center for treatment to contain it," added Hassan.
However, the area Public Health Officer Mr Mohamed Hassan has urged Garissa residents to be extra cautious and observe high levels of hygiene.
The new cases come barely one month after two other people were admitted at the same facility with tests turning positive for cholera.
