Five inmates from Eldoret prison escaped while en-route to Kabarnet Law Courts where they were being taken for a hearing of their case.
Confirming the incident, the officer in charge of Kabarnet Prison Maurice Mbula said that the inmates attacked the wardens who were escorting them when they were just about to reach the court.
“One warden was injured after he was allegedly hit with handcuffs in the commotion that ensued before the inmates escaped,” said Mbula.
He added, "It is true that on Friday we had an incident involving prisoners from Eldoret Prison attending Kabarnet Prison Law Courts. Unfortunately, along the way they attacked the officers escorting them and managed to jump from the moving vehicle and escaped."
Mbula noted that the escapees are still at large despite an ongoing search and added that the incident has already been reported at Kabarnet Police Station.
He asked area residents to report any suspicious persons they may find in their midst.
