Kisumu is a city located in the western part of Kenya along the great Lake Victoria, the second largest freshwater lake in the world.

Kisumu is the largest and the only city in the Western part of Kenya and the second most significant commercial center in the Lake Victoria basin after Uganda's Kampala.2. The name Kisumu came from the Luo word 'Kisuma' or 'Sumo' which means place of trade or rather barter trade. This means Kisumu began as a place of trade in the early years when the Europeans were still in the country.3. Kisumu grew into a town when Mombasa railway reached there in 1901. This is to mean that development commenced in Kisumu when the railway construction finally reached there. The railway is functional up to date.4. The city of Kisumu was initially planned to be constructed where the Kisumu International Airport is currently situated, but the area was considered unfit due to the poor soils there and the area was also unfit for the expansion of the city.5. Kisumu is one of the only two cities in Kenya which can be accessed by all the four known means of transport in Kenya; road, water, railway, and air. The other city is Mombasa.
