Kisumu County government in partnership with the French government have launched a Sh400 million initiative to rehabilitate five schools in the county.
The schools that will benefit from the initiative include Rota Primary School, Got Nyabondo Primary School, Angira Primary School, Reya Primary School and Thim Primary School.
Speaking to the press at the Kisumu City Hall on Monday during the ceremony to sign the partnership, Agency France Development Director Yves Boudot said that the agency is committed to finance the renovation of the five schools. "Today we are here to witness the signing of contracts of rehabilitation of five schools in Kisumu," said Boudot.
He said that once the structures are complete, pupils will be able to learn in better facilities and a better environment which will have a positive impact on their performance. "The schools will be able to attract more pupils," noted Boudot.
He said the success of the project will require the establishment of a good relation between city management with the contractors, local leaders and community members.
"So that the facilities improve, they have to receive the support of the community. For the next one year these five schools will be the talk of Kisumu," said Boudot.
Governor Jack Ranguma warned contractors against doing shoddy jobs saying their contracts will be withdrawn.
Kisumu City Manager Doris Ombara said that the funds will be used to construct two extra streams in the five schools.
"Part of the funds will construct Early Child Development (ECD) centres in the schools, perimeter walls, modern toilets and buy furniture for schools," said Ombara.
Kisumu consultant architect Charles Ndeto said that water supply is critical adding that boreholes and high level tanks will be set up.
