Zoo Kericho’s Michael Madoya surprised many on Friday night, after he won four awards during the 2017 Kenyan Premier League awards gala.

Despite winning the KPL title, no Gor Mahia player won any award, which was held under the shadow of sponsors Sportpesa’s departure from the Kenyan league.

The lanky midfielder was the star of the night, as he took home the four awards, including the Most Valuable Player as the best of the best in the league were feted.

He also scooped the New Young Player of the Year award, Fair Play Player of the Year award as well as the Best Midfielder of the Year award.

With the player playing for the first time in the top flight, it was a surprise for many and his as well having scooped all the titles.

“Honestly I did not think I could win all. I was expecting like one, but all the four was never in my mind,” he said as he spoke to journalists.

He says he now aim is to help his team life the Kenyan Premier League, the same way he won the four titles.

His clean sweep of the awards, which come with an astonishing Sh1.7 million in prize money raised eyebrows, since Zoo Kericho finished at position 12th out of 18.

Despite Gor winning the title with a 19-point difference, there was no winner from the team.

However, according to William Muluya, one of the judges, Madoya’s win was merited, as the process was done fairly.

“It was a free process as the captains and the coaches gave out their account, and of course it was evidence of the performance of individuals during the season,” he said.

Patrick Matasi won the Golden Glove, who beat Jeff Oyiemba of Kariobangi Sharks.
