And getting promoted, sometime, may not just come because the employer has seen your capabilities of improving output in the company. It comes after you have asked for it.

But why do employees often ignore such requests? Read below;

1. Asking for too much at a go

Many employees usually ask for a promotion, a pay rise as well as more privileges at once and this, according to Human Resource managers frustrates employers. Always know your priorities and understand how to work down on your list more concisely if you're to be considered for a higher rank.

2. Working too hard

Don't always try so hard to convince your employer that you are the best bet for a promotion by working so hard because this behavior sometimes sacks bosses. Focus on doing your work well and always align to the office culture. Working hard in some offices doesn't earn one a promotion, especially where office politics take a centre role.

3. Asking for it at a wrong place and time

Endeavour to ensure you ask for promotions at the right place and make sure there is enough time for the discussion. Don't pop the question during lunch break or when the boss has had a bad day accomplishing his or her tasks.

4. Using the request to 'test' your employer

Try this method and if he correctly reads your mind, be rest assured you will never land any position higher than your current rank.

5. Job searching when request rejected

Even if your promotion is rejected, stick to your work. You never know when it will come. You may job search, find that 'dream' job only to realise that you have actually jumped out the frying pan into the fire.
