Five nursery school pupils were on Tuesday died on the spot after a speeding car hit them at Awasi along the Kisumu-Nairobi Highway.
The children were walking home, 15 metres away from the highway on the pedestrian pathway. Witnesses of the incident said the car lost control, veered off the road and hit the young learners.
Two others were injured and were taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital in Kisumu.
Valarie Ogweno, a Kenya Red Cross paramedic, said one of the children had a serious head injuries while the other was in stable condition.
Nyando OCPD Elias Gitonga said the car was avoiding head-on collision with another when it landed on the children.
"The driver lost control, veered off the road hit a ditch before landing on the children killing them on the spot," Gitonga said.
He added that the driver, Yegon Cheruiyot, was in their custody and will be arraigned in court with charges of causing death by dangerous driving. Gitonga said the driver complained of internal injury, but he was taken for check up at Ahero County Hospital.
Ann Auma, mother to six-year-old Faith Aluoch who perished in the accident said she and other parents were on the opposite side of the road waiting for traffic to clear so they could pick their children when the accident occurred. Two teachers of the pupils, Irene Akinyi and Nereah Adhiambo, arrived at the scene as the bodies were being taken away.
They said they had released the pupils 15 minutes before the 3 pm tragic event.
