Confirming the incident, Mombasa County Commissioner Maalim Mohamed said they have launched investigations into the incident.

"We will only reach a conclusion on what started the fire after the investigations," said Maalim.

The five students were taken to Coast General Hospital, with breathing complications.

On his part, Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir said no serious injures were reported during the incident.

“I thank the County Government and KPA for their quick response to contain the fire. Five students were immediately treated for trauma. I also wish to thank the Kenya Red Cross who assisted in ambulances, first aid and blankets,” said the MP.

The MP however said they do not suspect an arson attack, as the students were all asleep when the dormitory which is located on the second floor caught fire.
