Five women were Monday arraigned in a Nyamira court and charged for allegedly circumcising their female children said to be below 11 years old.
The five appeared before Resident Magistrate Ruth Kitagwa and were charged for perpetuating the vice on diverse dates during the December festive season.
They are accused of circumcising a total of seven under age girls on December 11, 2015 in at Nyaisa village, Manga sub county in Nyamira and on December 9, 2015 at Gekano village in Manga.
They all denied the charges and were released on Sh100,000 bond with sureties of similar amounts or cash bails of Sh50,000.
Their cases will be mentioned on January 12 before a full hearing on February 8.
The arrests come at a time when the National Anti-FGM Board and the local administration put lower level administrators on notice over the continued vice, with more than 50,000 girls aged below 18 being marked as potential victims of the heinous practice.
Nyamira County Commissioner Josephine Onunga commended local administrators whom she said had cracked the whip on perpetrators of the illegal act.
