Kenyan teams have had struggles competing with teams in continental competitions with most of them not even being able to make it past the preliminary stages, with this year’s representatives, Gor Mahia being the first to break that jinx.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa revealed that the regular season will now be running from August to May with the current season serving as a curtain raiser to the coming changes.

"We are changing our football calendar, from January to December, to the August to May calendar. So, this year is a transition season and we have asked the KPL to try and conclude its matches by end of October because CAF is also transitioning.”

"So, in December this year, another league season starts, which is going to end in June next year in readiness to the start of a new season in August next year,” Mwendwa said.

A reaction is expected from various KPL clubs going forward but its no doubt that most of them will like and cooperate with the changes with the previous schedule having proven problematic to them in terms of coping with the rigors of the league.

It is a decent move to consider the CAF calendar as on most occasions, the calendar has clashed with the local league’s arrangements and this has let to teams releasing players for the international friendlies or games late on such that most were tired and could not simply get going and notch up victories in international fixtures.

Going forward, the change will help transition the players and allow them plenty of room to flourish in the face of other continental opponents or the international games.
