Speaking at his hospital bed at St Elizabeth hospital, John Mwaniki says it was a miracle that he was not killed even after one of the attackers ordered his accomplices to finish him after he tried to fight back.

"I had just closed my shop and was walking to the house when I met people carrying pangas and rungus who started beating me up without telling me anything," Mwaniki said.

According to Mwaniki, the attack might have been politically instigated because he was frisked and his voters card taken away.

He now calls on police officers to intensify night patrols saying that he does not wish anybody else to go through a similar experience. "What I know is that they will come back because after I fell down and pretended to be dead, one said that the next time we come, we will kill more people. I thank God that I survived," he added.

One person died, scores others injured including a police officer in an attack facilitated by members of a gang that police suspect to be Mungiki members.
