The positive impact of the ban on plastic bags has begun to be felt on Lake Nakuru National Park.
Deputy park Warden Harun Sang said unlike in the past when they used to collect a lot of plastic bags the waste has reduced by over 90%.
“Unlike in the past when we used to collect a lot of plastic bags the waste has reduced by over 90%.This has since restored the eco system integrity of the park that has since been branded as a premium par,” he said.
He added that, since the development with reduction of plastic bags getting into the lake, flamingos have returned to the lake.
“Although plastic bottles still remain a challenge but so far there is development and we expect the number of visitors into the park to increase especially during the festive season especially since we have no travel bans that have in the past affected tourism in Lake Nakuru National Park,” he said.
While noting that water levels in the park have reduced in the last one year, Sang said there are about 3500 flamingos in the lake.
He attributed their return to reduced pollution since the county government has been treating sewer that finds its way into the lake.
It should be noted that Lake Nakuru national park is home to 450 species of wildlife and 4500 species of birds.
