Most rivers cutting across Kisumu County have broken their banks displacing hundreds of families as rains continue to wreak havoc in the region.
Kenya Red Cross Society manager in charge of Kisumu and Siaya Counties Emmanuel Owako said the situation might worsen if rains persist in the coming days.
Owako said the flash floods have caused destruction in Muhoroni, Kisumu East and Nyando sub counties.
He said the affected families have been evacuated to evacuation centres while some are camping in schools.
“This is the beginning of the long rains and families living in low land areas must brace for tougher times a head but as Red Cross we will stand with them,” he said.
Speaking in Kisumu, Owako said the county government of Kisumu carried out some de-siltation work in a number of rivers within the county but the heavy down pour was too much.
He urged families living in low land areas to move out in good time to avert any loss of lives or destruction of property since more rains are expected in the coming days.
Owako announced that they have a contingency plan for the county to respond to any disaster caused by floods.
He said that they are working closely with other agencies offering humanitarian aid to the affected families.
Owako further noted that Siaya County is now calm after the weekend tragedy where five people died as a result of flash floods in Bondo Sub County.
