Students in institutions of higher learning have been challenged to avoid rampant consumption of alcohol and instead focus on their studies.

Gender sociologist and Kenyatta University lecturer Raychelle Murungi challenged the students against taking too much of their valuable time in engaging in misplaced priorities such alcohol consumption as it will destroy their reputation.

Murungi further said alcohol taking was so rampant among college students and urged them to focus on their educastudies as it’s the pathway to their next avenues.

“Use most of your time to engage on valuable issues as this will make more productive in your society,”said Murungi.

She spoke on Thursday at Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology during a youth’s awareness forum.

She added that college students need to use their time wisely and avoid indulging in issues which can affect their future life.

Gideon Mwaura, a student leader at the institution said youths need to focus by engaging on issues that would later add value to their lives.

Mwaura said alcohol addiction in the college is brought about by peer groupings amongst the youths.

He urged the students to get responsible by avoiding peer influences which leads them in such bad behaviors whether in college or at home.

Esther Wangari, a student in a Kiambu college said alcohol taking in colleges has become the order of the day since most of the youths use it as a form of entertainment and to relieve stress.

Wangari said the vice leads to some students quitting school and others getting themselves to alcohol related problems such as sex assaults.

She also said such students need guidance and counseling on the effects of excessive drinking.
